What was the challenge at elobau?

Our goal was to digitally store and evaluate all product data in our PLM system to ensure product and material compliance. This involves approximately 14,000 products that we distribute worldwide. Additionally, we need to reliably assess the compliance of all purchased components from our suppliers.

How do you use Substantio?

We use it for the systematic verification of our own material compliance, for requesting declarations within the supply chain, and for SCIP uploads.

How does it work exactly?

Since Substantio is directly integrated with our PLM tool, Siemens Teamcenter, we always have access to the latest bill of materials (BOM) along with the corresponding material compliance information. Missing material compliance data can be requested directly from suppliers via the PLM system, thanks to the Substantio integration. The data is then automatically fed back into the system. If components contain SVHC substances, SCIP dossiers must be submitted to ECHA. At our company, this process is automated within Teamcenter through Substantio.

How do you integrate information from the supply chain?

With Substantio, we can communicate directly with our suppliers. We conduct automated queries from within the system, for example, when new SVHC substances are published by ECHA. This eliminates the need for countless individual emails, and suppliers can enter their declarations directly into Substantio, ensuring that the updated data is available in the system.

How do you handle reporting to ECHA via the SCIP database?

We manufacture several thousand products containing electronic components. Due to the complexity of our assemblies, there is a high probability that at least one component contains an SVHC substance. The ability to analyze assemblies and automate SCIP uploads via Substantio is a major advantage for us, as manually declaring items in the SCIP database would be unmanageable. With Substantio, this process runs automatically.

What are the benefits of Substantio?

Substantio gives us deeper insights into our supply chain, providing a much greater level of detail about our products. We can trace materials down to the substance level, which creates long-term advantages. For example, by leveraging supply chain knowledge early in the product development stage, we can make informed decisions about materials. This helps us secure market access early in the process.
Another key benefit of integrating Substantio with our PLM system is that we can now meet regulatory requirements like REACH and RoHS much faster.

What does material compliance mean to you?

Today, addressing material compliance is essential. Based on what we know, future market access will only be granted if material data is structured and traceable. No business without material compliance.
