10 reasons why we think our explainer video is damn good
Material Compliance is a serious topic. Regulations, deadlines, SVHC lists, supplier requests – this isn’t the stuff entertainment is made of. Normally.
We tried anyway. The result is our first explainer video. And because we really like it – and because self-reflection is, as they say, a virtue – we’re explaining here why.
1. Compliance managers deserve a spotlight.
They keep products legally compliant, stay on top of a regulatory landscape that’s constantly changing, and make sure companies don’t step into expensive pitfalls. Usually in the background, without much fanfare. Without them, literally nothing works – but it rarely gets talked about. Elena, our main character, represents all of these people. We think it was long overdue.
2. A good story gets the point across better than any bullet point list.
Yes, including this one. We wanted to show what everyday life feels like: before Substantio, and after. We naturally cover our main features too – that’s part of it. But the story stays punchy and, above all, alive.
3. We racked our brains.
90 seconds – that’s all we had, and there’s so much to explain: two sides of the platform, manufacturers and suppliers, BOMs, declarations, regulations, reporting – you name it. How do you get all that across without losing half your audience halfway through? Tough. We think we pulled it off. And for anyone who finds even that too long: there’s a 40-second version too. 😉
4. Everyone loves video. And video ranks better. We want people to see it.
We’ll admit that openly. We think our software is good. We believe in what we’re building. And our developers put so much heart into it every day that we owe it to them to make it visible. So yes – we want reach. And we hope you like it as much as we do.
5. The illustrations are hand-drawn. Actual hand.
No stock illustrations. No AI-generated characters out of a box. A very talented illustrator drew Elena, Marc, and their world specifically for us. Every line, every gesture – handmade. We think you can tell. And we think that makes a difference.
6. The colors.
We handed the production team our CI manual and hoped something would come out of it that actually looks like Substantio. And we think it looks like Substantio. That might sound obvious, but it isn’t. So a big thank you and hat tip to the production team at @Mynd
7. It's not dusty.
That was the real challenge. Compliance content is usually… let’s say: functional. Our video is colorful, has personality, and – hopefully – is fun. Whether we pulled that off is for you to decide. But we genuinely tried.
8. Yes, there are technical terms. Quite a few.
SVHC, BOM, RoHS, REACH – if you’re not in the industry, you’ll probably check out here. We know that. But that’s our daily reality. And that’s exactly why we build Substantio: because this complexity is real, and because it should still be manageable. The video speaks to the people who know these terms and live with them every day.
9. It was a real team effort.
From the first idea to the finished video, a lot of minds went into it. Concept, copy, design, production – everyone contributed their part. The result belongs to the whole team. And that makes it just a little bit better.
10. Because we're just getting started.
This is our first explainer video. Not our last. We’re learning, experimenting, getting better. And who knows – maybe Elena gets a sequel someday.
Still not convinced? Just watch it.
